"Girls Just Wanna… make sick bangers”
Rhythm Lab Records presents Underdog, a collaborative project between Shauna x Kahreign as an extension of our IWD event.

The commitments we make to women can’t start and end in March. Last International Women’s Day, Reform Radio and Rhythm Lab Records made this promise to the cis/trans women, as well as non-binary people that attended their “Girls just wanna...” International Women’s Day Event. Underdog the collaborative single between artists Kahreign and Shauna is a small but significant first step in fulfilling this promise. The single is the debut release in the newest Rhythm Lab Records project which aims to facilitate collaborations between women who have never met before. Rhythm Lab Records in partnership with Reform Radio and The Arts Council England are working to provide them with the space, resources and time to do so- at a period where such support is still sorely lacking.

“Go to your people” Kahreign offered as she meditated on the biggest lesson she had learned from Shauna during the process. “Shauna is the first female artist I have ever really collabed with. There’s always this idea that you have to seek someone really far from you to make something but truly home is where the heart is, and being able to work with someone who also represents the female identity in her own way was soothing. There were days where I wasn’t feeling my most productive because stuff was going on in the background and being able to message Shauna without being too apologetic but still be understood, I knew I was working with someone who just gets me on all levels. I didn’t feel pressure, I didn’t feel uncomfortable, I didn’t feel restricted in any way.” Collaborations like these are important because they allow for free flowing creativity between people who have shared experiences.

The pair bring out an unabashed enthusiasm in each other through their shared love for music. Kahreign offers, “It’s like she helped me tap into my roots, she gave me something I could have fun with and it’s like I went back to little me sitting on the bus trying to make music like Azealia Banks again and I could just have fun.” The track itself is invigorating. The confidence that the artists have allowed to blossom in each other radiates effortlessly throughout. Shauna’s production is bouncy and immediate, the song is in and out and just like that the listener is out of breadth. She shares in an interview how she feels about her work, “It’s probably my favourite song I’ve made. It’s cool to learn now that I will never stop learning and even when I’m producing in 40 years I’d know there’s going to be even more stuff I haven’t learned and that’s exciting!”

Kahreign shares, “Underdogs are the people you don’t see coming and I see that in myself and I definitely see that in Shauna too, the path for us in the music industry is tumultuous but it’s going to be even more rewarding when that path leads us straight to the top.” Adding to her statement Shauna says “I think women in the music industry are Underdogs, they don’t get enough recognition or as much love as their male counterparts. I think all minorities in the music industry are Underdogs.

This is one of many steps in Rhythm Lab Records and Reform Radio’s mission to create an entertainment industry that is inclusive for everyone. In partnership with the Arts Council England, the team at Rhythm Lab Records have used this opportunity to collaborate with two amazing female artists. Neither the station nor the label have any intention of just stopping there.
